Bright blue ribbons appeared in downtown Sechelt over the weekend to mark the anniversary of the evacuation of the Seawatch neighbourhood.

The 14-home subdivision was ordered evacuated Feb. 15, 2019 after the District of Sechelt declared a state of local emergency over fears of damage, injury or potentially loss of life as a result of ongoing problems with sinkholes.

The ribbons, each with a tag saying simply, “Seawatch evacuation anniversary,” were tied to trees along Cowrie Street between Acacia Park and Sechelt Municipal Hall.

The District of Sechelt is currently named in 12 lawsuits related to the sinkholes and the evacuation, including two dating back to 2015 that are now scheduled to go to court in May.
