Blasting damage on Wakefield Road on Monday, Jan. 21.

The District of Sechelt says WorkSafe BC is now investigating after blasting on Wakefield Road Monday afternoon scattered large blocks of rock, causing damage to the road surface and knocking out Telus and Eastlink cable service.

The road was reopened and as of Tuesday morning Telus and Eastlink were still working to get services restored.

The blasting incident follows a road closure triggered earlier this month when heavy rains overwhelmed a culvert, causing damage to the area where Wakefield meets Highway 101.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure will pay for a replacement culvert, which is expected to be installed next month by contractors already working on the $1.8-million sewer expansion project in the area.

A different failed culvert, further up Wakefield Road, is due to replaced with a concrete one at an estimated cost of around $450,000.

Some neighbourhood residents were already raising concerns about ditches and drainage in the area during the sewer project work before the Jan. 3 rainstorm.

The sewer system work is due to be completed in early March, to be followed by restoration of the paved surfaces.
