BC Ferries is apologizing to Sunshine Coast customers for being unable “to carry everyone who wished to travel” on Sunday, Oct. 21.

Deborah Marshall, executive director of public affairs for the ferry company, confirmed to Coast Reporter that 18 vehicles were left behind when the last ferry departed from the Langdale terminal.

Anecdotally, it appears the Sunshine Coast Art Crawl, good weather and a minor hockey tournament combined to make Sunday a busy day for ferry travel. BC Ferries also reported unusually high volume on other routes last weekend, including multi-sailing waits on the Swartz Bay-Tsawwassen run, which is popular for people heading to the Gulf Islands.

Ferries switched to its winter schedule Oct. 9, with eight round-trips and a final sailing out of Langdale at 8:55 p.m.

“We certainly make every effort to accommodate all of our customers. We apologize that we weren’t able to in this instance,” Marshall said, adding that they will add extra unscheduled sailings “if an overload is substantial at the end of the day.”

There is no set threshold for ordering an extra trip.
