Updated: Small wildfire near Brohm Lake, in Squamish area

UPDATE June 28, 11:43 a.m.: The BC Wildfire Service says it has determined that this incident was a false alarm. Upon investigation, there was no fire at the location where the report originated from.

 

The BC Wildfire Service is reporting a potential small wildfire has been sparked near Brohm Lake.

As of Saturday evening, a 0.01-hectare blaze has been identified by authorities.

The fire is identified as new, and the suspected cause is unknown as of now.

Wildfire information officer Dorthe Jacobsen told The Chief the fire service is still working to confirm a sighting of the blaze.

Jacobsen said that any time resources are assigned to a cause, they have create a file identifying the case as a fire — even if the incident hasn't been fully confirmed.

As of about 5:50 p.m., authorities have yet to confirm the sighting.

A plane is overhead, working to locate the potential fire, she said.

The possible blaze comes amid a very busy weekend in the Sea to Sky, as many have flocked to the Squamish area to enjoy the summer weather.

It's been exceptionally hot, with temperatures ranging in the mid-30s and more throughout the day.
