Burnaby sees surge in weekly COVID-19 cases as B.C. hits record

Cases spread out across city as no more outbreaks at long-term care homes

New COVID-19 cases in Burnaby surged during the last reporting period, remaining well above the 200-case mark for a sixth consecutive week, according to the latest data from the BC Centre for Disease Control.

In an update posted to the BCCDC website, Burnaby saw 244 new infections between March 21 and 27 – more than the 210 new infections between March 14 and 20, but down slightly from the 246 new coronavirus cases from March 7 to 13. There were 203 new cases from Feb. 28 to March 6, 270 new cases from Feb. 21 to 27 and 243 cases from Feb. 14 to 20.

The most cases Burnaby has seen in one week was 341 from Dec. 6-12.

B.C. cracked the 1,000 daily case mark according to an update on Wednesday from public health officials.

With no outbreaks at long-term care homes in Burnaby, the cases are spread out around the community.

A Burnaby fast food restaurant was closed temporarily after one of its staff members tested positive for COVID-19.

The McDonald’s at 7229 Kingsway in the Edmonds neighbourhood had a worker test positive for coronavirus.

Two other Burnaby businesses are grappling with fresh COVID-19 cases – with customers being warned to watch for symptoms.

In the Metrotown area, Wholesale Club, 5335 Kingsway, Burnaby has had a case discovered involving one of their staff members. The last day the team member worked was on March 23.

Fraser Health has also issued a warning about a COVID-19 exposure at a Burnaby beauty salon.

The health authority posted on its website a notification about First Hair and Beauty Studio, warning customers and staff who were at this location from March 23-25 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. The business is located at 7639 – Sixth St. in the Edmonds neighbourhood.

Anyone who was there on those dates is advised to self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19, said Fraser Health.
