People often say laughter is the key to curing many things, and Richmond’s Gateway Theatre is bringing just that to community members who need a break from the pandemic.

The theatre is organizing a mental health discussion, titled “Mad Practice: Sanity Skills for Crazy Times,” which will be led by comedian and theatre-maker Jan JD Derbyshire on May 15.

Derbyshire, described as a performing artist and “certified insane person,” will be sharing their knowledge and leading the discussion to remind people to take a break from their stress and to remember to take care of their mental wellbeing.

As an artist, Derbyshire is involved in various creative works from traditional writing to stand-up comedy, as well as the creator of the hit show Certified.

In the mental health discussion, participants can join in with their camera on or off, through text chat or voice to share what they are comfortable with.

“It’s a chance to feel things, share things, laugh at things, cry at things and connect with fellow humans for a short while,” reads the Gateway Theatre media statement.

“We can’t solve your problems, but hopefully we can lighten the load.”

The virtual meet-up will take place on Zoom on May 15 from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

To attend, registration is required at https://gatewaytheatre.ticketspice.com/mad-practice and the event is on a "pay-what-you-can" system.
