Brendon, Janelle, Jonah, Sawyer and Ruby Klassen compete in the Davis Bay Sandcastle Competition in 2024. The Klassen team was among three top finishers in the Family category. The annual event — sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Lions Club of Sechelt — attracted 27 competitive groups and scores of curious spectators to the sandbars of Mission Point.

Are you a wannabe structural engineer, excavator, or architect…or just a family or group looking for some summertime fun? No matter your motivation, you are invited to join in the fun at the Davis Bay Sandcastle Competition, hosted by the Sunshine Coast Lions Club, July 27.

Teams or individuals can compete in one of three categories: Youth, family or group. Cost is $10 per entry and registration will commence at 11:30 a.m. Your 10’x10’ sand quadrant will be available for building from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. and judging will be from 3:30 to 4 p.m., with the winners being announced at 4 p.m. Entries will be judged on originality, difficulty, execution, use of space and the “WOW” factor. Only natural, non-living materials found on the beach can be used in your sculpture. So pack up your shovels, rakes, buckets and come join in the fun.

Jim Taylor will also be providing music for your listening pleasure and will certainly add to the festive atmosphere of the day.

Slap on a hat, slip on the sunscreen, and come out prepared to amaze or be amazed by our talented Coasters. Spectators are also welcome. Can’t wait to see you there!
