Music returns to the Landing

Music in the Landing, now in its ninth season, brings live music to outdoor locations in Gibsons. The program is sponsored by the Town of Gibsons and presents localtalented professional and emerging musicians of all ages and styles.

On Saturday, see Sangita, a seven-piece groove and funk beat group, in Pioneer Square from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Troubadour Matthew Lovegrove, a new talent to the Coast, will entertain in front of the Pink House, next to Leo's from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. And then the first evening concert in Winegarden Parkwill bea double bill with singer/composer Angie McCauley joined by David Groom at 7 p.m. followed bytraditional roots singer/songwriter Susan Hatchard Bear ofShady Day. Joiningher will be Pamela Messner, Perry Baycroft, Karen Davis and Joe Stanton. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets.

Sunday will showcase a newly formed group, The Country Classics, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the Sundial stage next to the Gibsons Sunday Market with Kevin Crofton,Andy Amanovich, Ian McLatchie and Graham Walker. As one of the co-ordinators of Music in the Landing and a children's performer, Walker says it's his chance to sing some grown-up songs. All shows are free with donations gratefully accepted.

Gallery show

The Landing Gallery in Lower Gibsons hosts a new show, A West Coast State of Mind, this Saturday, with a reception from 4 to 8 p.m. Refreshments will be served and the public is invited to check out the latest from a variety of artists, including some new to the Coast.

Harbour show

The Harbour Gallery starts its Summer Membership Exhibit today (July 1).Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.The gallery is located at the Pender Harbour Cultural Centre in Madeira Park (across from the elementary school). The artwork will include stained glass, watercolours, oils, acrylics, etchings, sketches and more.

Quilt show

This Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Quilters' Guild presentsGoing Beyond Quilt Show and Youth Festival withfeatured artist Hilary Henderson, a special exhibit from Quilters Out of Bounds, a youth exhibit, workshop and merchants' mall. Just Crazy

Coast performer Victoria Maxwell has an interesting project underway in Vancouver. The premiere of her newest show, That's Just Crazy Talk, is part of an innovative research study led by a bipolar disorder organization.

The study is to explore the impacts of a "lived experience" theatrical performance on mental health issues. Performances take place in Vancouver on July 6 and in Toronto on July 28. This is a free event but you must register to attend. Participation involves watching the play and completing pre- and post-performance surveys.People participating in the research component of this event (i.e. people who live with bipolar disorderand their healthcare providers) will be given priority registration. SOPA Preview

There's a great lineup for the 10th annual fundraiser, the Showcase of Performing Arts (SOPA) including a mixture of music, plays, slideshows, film and workshops, 18 events over 15 days. SOPA showcases mostly local talent but has expanded toinclude David Woodhead's Confabulation (July 13) andvocalist Anna Beaumont (July 16).

Gala opening night kicks off on Thursday, July 7. Doors openat 7 p.m. with a no host bar, nibbles and performances at 8 p.m. featuring NirBlu, Jess Hart, Bad to the Bow and the ever-popular Billy Hillpicker Band. Tickets are $18. On July 8 performances continue with the Sunshine Coast School of Celtic Music's Trad Band at 8 p.m. (tickets $18); July 9, Vocal Intent at 8 p.m. (tickets $15); July 10, a Ric Careless slideshow, HimalayanOdyssey: the Majestic and the Mystic, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12 with proceeds shared with the Sunshine Coast Conservation Association. Tickets for all SOPA events are available at Gaia's and Laedeli in Gibsons and Sechelt Visitor Centre.

Vocal Intent

Vocal Intent presents their summer concert tour July 8 to 10, Songs for Summer. The show offers an eclectic mix of popular, classical, folk and jazz, most of it a cappella.The July 8 show is at 8 p.m. at the Living Faith Lutheran Church in Davis Bay, the Saturday show is at the Heritage Playhouse at 8 p.m. and the Sunday show at 2 p.m. at the Pender Harbour School of Music. The six-member group has been together for several years, working on their ensemble sound. Members are: Sylvain Brochu, Jon Eriksson, Jen MacInnes, Tom Kellough, Elizabeth Scott and Tina Wesseling. Katherine Hume and Alec Tebbutt are guest singers for some of the pieces. Tickets are at the door for Friday and Sunday, or at ticket outlets for Saturday's show.

At Gibsons Public Art Gallery, two shows are running concurrently until July 12: Hilary Anne Stephens' Haiku exhibition of interpretive landscape photographs, and Ian Hooley's Stone Tides, stone sculpture. See www.gibsonspublicartgallery.ca for more information.
