A screen capture of Marianne Ihlen and Leonard Cohen from the film Marianne and Leonard: Words of Love.

Marianne and Leonard: Words of Love is an incredibly moving documentary about Leonard Cohen and Marianne Ihlen, his Norwegian lover and muse, that will appeal to all Canadians who love Cohen and his music.

The film displays a vast amount of archival footage from the ‘60s and ‘70s, the era that inspired this iconic musician/poet’s life. It paints a vivid picture of a complicated relationship and of the times that documentary maker Nick Broomfield explores in his tender, funny and hauntingly moving new film, culminating in Cohen’s final, poignant message to Marianne.

The Sunshine Coast Film Society (SCFS) screens Marianne and Leonard: Words of Love on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2 p.m. at the Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt, and Monday, Jan. 6 and Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons. (Please note, Tuesday screenings are less crowded than Mondays.)

Admission for SCFS members: $5, single event membership: add $4. Annual memberships and Gibsons tickets can be purchased online at www.scfs.ca or at the doors. Sechelt tickets are available at the door.
