Last waltz for summer music

You’ll have two chances to catch Karen Graves this weekend: on Friday at the Gazebo on the Wharf in Gibsons, and at Slow Sundays in Roberts Creek, accompanied by Budge Schachte at both events.

Slow Sundays in the Creek closes out the 2018 season on Sunday, Sept. 2 with two preeminent musicians on the Sunshine Coast. Along with Loose Endings at about noon followed by the Ukulele Ladies at 1:15 p.m., stop by Roberts Creek to hear Budge Schachte on guitar and Karen Graves on sax, flute and vocals. The Slow Sunday Market and the Library will be open. Last MITL 

The last Music in the Landing for the season opens on Friday, Aug. 31 with Karen Graves and Budge Schachte in the gazebo on Gibsons wharf. On Saturday, Sept. 1 the Steve Schwabl Duo performs at 11 a.m. at Pioneer Square while Gingersnaps and Shortbread busk at the pink house at 2 p.m. At 6:30 p.m. fans of Wanda Nowicki can hear her perform with her Q’tet at Winegarden Park. The Jazz Group of Seven should liven things up on Sunday at 11 a.m. in the Landing. 

Summer Music 

On Saturday, Sept. 1 the Sechelt Summer Music Series winds up with Katrina Bishop at noon and The Rakish Angles at 1 p.m. It’s free on the Sechelt Library Lawn Stage. 

Ken at Molly’s 

Ken Dunn plays music this Friday, Aug. 31, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Anna Green Art in Molly’s Lane, Gibson’s Landing. He’ll perform original instrumental compositions at the grand opening of artist Anna Green’s new gallery at Molly’s Seaside Market. See: www.kendunnmusic.com for more about the musician. 

Panto Auditions 

An audition call is out for Treasure Island, The Panto. The play will run in November through the first two weeks of December in Gibsons and Sechelt. More info is available from richlund01@gmail.com or 604-315-9774. Auditions are scheduled for Aug. 30 and 31 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Harmony Hall, 686 Harmony Lane, Gibsons. 

A.D.D. 

If you’re planning your long weekend and looking for a fun night out in Gibsons, A.D.D. is performing their rock and roll, R&B, funky show at the Gibsons Legion on Saturday, Sept. 1. Come out and dance. The first note is at 8 p.m. and it wraps up at midnight. 

Music Fest 

The 37th Annual Sun-shine Music Festival is on this weekend, Sept. 1 and 2, at Palm Beach in Powell River. It’s a celebration of music from across Canada and you can expect many musical performances in a picturesque setting on the waterfront with craft market and food vendors. Dissident Writer 

Roberts Creek writer Michael Klein invites you to his book launch and discussion of Dissident Doctor (Harbour Publishing), subtitled Catching Babies and Challenging the Medical Status Quo. The launch is on Thursday, Sept. 6 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre (5714 Medusa, Sechelt). All are welcome. 

Author Reading 

Following in the footsteps of authors like Donna Morrissey and Alistair MacLeod, Vancouver author Ethel Whitty draws from her Eastern Canada roots in writing her novel, The Light a Body Radiates. The story is told through the eyes of Eileen MacPherson, a child of eight, when her beloved 16-year-old brother, Francis, leaves home after a violent family episode. Over the next 25 years, everything she understands to be true changes. On Thursday, Sept. 6, from 7 to 9 p.m., Whitty launches her book at the Sechelt Library (5797 Cowrie St.). Admission is free. Books will be available for sale. 

Choirs 

Music Makers choirs are starting soon. The Adult Choir (Wednesday night group) starts on Sept. 5. Email Lynne Dickson at lynnesings@telus.net for more information.

The Choir for the Terrified was a great success last season and so the name has been changed to The Monday Morning Feel Good Choir. It’s on Monday mornings, starting Sept. 10 from 10:30 to noon for those who want an easy entrance into the choir experience, those who are nervous, and those who like singing in the morning. 

Music Makers also presents Fiddlers Wild! Does your child love music? Fiddlers Wild! is a brand new violin program for five to 12 year olds at the Music Makers Studio in Davis Bay, starting in September, There are a few spots left. Sara Munson and Sara Fitzpatrick collectively bring a wealth of teaching and mentoring experience, providing budding musicians with inspiration and guidance toward a learning experience that is unique, fun and wild. Slow Fashion 

Wear From Here was conceived as a way to showcase local wearable designs and highlight the benefits of slow local fashion and production for the designers/makers and the community. The submission deadline has been extended to Sept. 15 if you wish to participate. For this second year there is a new venue. The Wear From Here show on the evening of Thursday, Oct. 18 at the Gibsons Public Market is to coincide with the 2018 Sunshine Coast Art Crawl. They invite all sectors of the fibre and wearable-maker community – from those who work with Fibre Shed materials (locally grown and harvested, and eco-dyed) and hand-spun and dyed, woven, knit, felted, sewn or otherwise crafted. Also those who work with commercially-available materials, recycled or up-cycled in their own designs of clothing, accessories, and jewelry. It’s a chance for consumers to see one-of-a-kind designs, many in natural and eco-friendly fibres, made locally. Contact Verna at vernachan@telus.net for more information.
