Blaine Dunaway returned to his former home on the Coast for the Gibsons Landing Jazz Festival last Saturday, June 17 and played some mellow violin with pianist Miles Black, bassist Jodi Proznick and drummer Kelby MacNayr.

When he finished a hauntingly lovely set, Graham Walker said a few words to the audience. Twenty-two years ago Walker had a brainwave to start a jazz festival, and not knowing how to begin, he put an ad in the paper for all interested to meet at the Flying Cow Café.

“Blaine came along,” Walker said, “and told me, ‘I’ll organize the musicians.’”

They founded their first festival in Dougall Park.

This year’s festival drew crowds to Gower Point Road to hear Katherine Penfold croon, the Elphi/Chat Jazz Band show their abilities and the Daniel Brubeck Quartet play some jazz with a groove.
