Baritone Philippe Sly and pianist Michael McMahon return to the Coast Recital Society this Sunday afternoon, Oct. 28, with an afternoon of music by Franz Schubert. The concert at the Ravens’ Cry Theatre begins at 2:30 p.m. with a pre-concert chat at 1:30 p.m. led by CRS artistic director Frances Wainwright.

Sly has been recognized internationally for his “beautiful, blooming tone and magnetic stage presence” (San Francisco Chronicle). He was first prize winner of the prestigious Concours Musical International de Montréal in 2012, and a grand prize winner at the 2011 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. He has performed major roles at the Paris Opera, Opéra de Lyon and Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. Recent engagements include concerts with the Montreal Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra and Les Violons du Roy, with such eminent conductors as Kent Nagano, Bernard Labadie, Yannick Nezet-Seguin and Jaap van Zweden. Pianist McMahon is Associate Professor of Piano and Voice at McGill University, and is the preferred partner to many of Canada’s finest singers. He has performed regularly throughout Canada and in Europe, Japan, and the U.S., with such singers as Karina Gauvin, Measha Brueggergosman, Gordon Bintner, Maureen Forrester, Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Michael Schade and Russell Braun.

The CRS program will consist of a performance of Schubert’s great song-cycle, Winterreise – Winter Journey – a cycle of 24 songs for voice and piano that Schubert composed towards the end of his short life. He died in Vienna in 1828 aged only 31. Winterreise is one of classical music’s greatest song cycles – a powerful and enigmatic masterpiece, an indispensable work of musical art. This CRS concert by Philippe Sly and Michael McMahon will be a rare opportunity for Sunshine Coast audiences to hear this extraordinary work.

The duration of Winterreise is approximately 75 minutes.

The work will be performed without intermission.
