The Sunshine Coast’s Caitlin Hicks will join two other B.C. authors for Remembrance Day readings on the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 11. The online event, Remembrance: Generational Stories of War, will feature Hicks reading from her work, Next of Kin, first published in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Also featured will be Jacqueline Carmichael, of Port Alberni, author of Heard Amid the Guns: True Stories from the Western Front, 1914-1918. Nanaimo writer Pat Skidmore will read from her biographical work, Dear Father, about having a parent with war-induced post-traumatic stress disorder. Things get underway on Facebook at 2 p.m. Enter Heard Amid the Guns into the FB search bar to access the event.

CoJazz kudos
Local musicians Anna Lumiere and Karen Graves and their band, Mimosa, have been selected to be part of the first Canadian Online Jazz Festival (CoJazz), which brings together jazz festivals from across the country. Starting Sunday, Nov. 8, you can catch free performances nightly. Mimosa, along with the Sister Jazz Orchestra, of North Vancouver, are representing the Fort Langley Jazz Festival in the national event. The two B.C. bands play Monday, Nov. 9 starting at 7 p.m. Check for the link to the performances at cojazz.ca

New exhibitions
In addition to the just-opened exhibit Our Ancient Forests at the Sunshine Coast Art Council’s Doris Crowston Gallery in Sechelt, there’s lots new to see at local galleries this month. We can’t list everything here, but among them, Gibsons Public Art Gallery (GPAG) has opened two shows: Inn Saie, by mixed-media artists Linda Nardelli and Vern Minard, and Mother Daughter Coast, showing the photography of Jessica Gabriel and Shelley Twohig. At Gibsons Public Market, Helen Platt and David Emerson Hall have their works on display in the atrium and upstairs in the Coastal Room. At The Kube in Gibsons, you can see what Vancouver’s April Matheson has been up to. All these shows are worth a good look.

Uh oh 2020!
It’s time to get your work ready to submit to GPAG for its annual members’ show, this year entitled Uh oh 2020! Our Present Tense. “The original intention of this exhibition was to celebrate the recent creative work of Gallery members,” the gallery said in a release. But this year, there’s an added purpose: “An end of year boost of sales to support local artists and our community’s public art gallery.” Submit one original piece by Nov. 29, and you’ll be on display. (Membership is just $20.)

Underwater gems
There are vast fields of exotic creatures called glass sponge populating the undersea floor of Georgia Strait, with many in Howe Sound. Their bodies are in fact glass, formed from natural silica particles in the ocean. And as they feed, they filter millions of cubic metres of seawater, helping curb pollution. Thought to have gone extinct 40 million years ago, they were recently rediscovered and efforts are underway to protect them. The 45-minute film Moonless Oasis, about the Howe Sound glass sponge and the efforts to document and preserve them, is now screening for free online on CBC Gem.

Also available for free viewing online is the award-winning short film, Tadpoles: The Big Little Migration, by Sunshine Coast-raised diver and filmmaker Maxwell Hohn. The producer of many underwater movie projects, Hohn has picked up two 2020 Canadian Cinematography Awards for his work on Tadpoles. To view it, go to vimeo.com and type the film’s title into the search bar.
