The Sunshine Coast is home to professional puppeteer Kris Fleerackers, and he will be performing a traditional puppet show this Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery. Fleerackers, who grew up in Belgium and has studied with master puppeteers in New York and Toronto, will present an original story, Little Sister Grimm. “In a fun, poetic production that changes the way we see the classic fairy tales, the brothers Grimm and their little sister come to life as puppets to tackle the problem of a story with no ending,” he said in a release. The show is suitable for all ages. General admission tickets are $10, or $25 per family, available at the door only. Door opens at 6:30 p.m., curtain at 7 p.m.

Go Rogue

It’s Rogue Arts Festival weekend, filled with an impressive amount of live music, art displays, workshops, and lots of communing and connecting. See the feature story above; full details are at www.roguefest.ca.

Open mics

If your inner performer is ready to bust out, there are two opportunities in the coming week for a five-minute performance. Janice Williams is hosting another of her series of open mics at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery on Tuesday, Aug. 27, from 7 to 9 p.m.

“This one will focus on your favourite inspiring or beloved songs, poetry, excerpts, and tales,” Williams said. It’s all about expressing art, she gently reminds, not airing rants. Admission is by donation to the gallery.

The following evening, Wednesday, Aug. 28, you can also share your prose, poetry or song in a five-minute presentation at the Gibsons Public Library. The theme is Summer’s End. “What does that mean to you? Childhood nostalgia, summer adventure, the start of something new, the end of something beautiful?” It starts at 6 p.m.

Summer music

Music in The Landing offers performances all weekend long, including Pam Gerone and Peter Hill, Nice Verde, Walter Martella Band, Verna Chan Quartet, and Rahel N’ Rose. Check Music in The Landing’s Facebook page for times and locations.

Slow Sundays in the Creek’s Aug. 25 lineup includes Loose Endings Ukulele Ensemble, Ukulele Ladies, and Steve Hinton Blues Band with special guest Simon Paradis. It runs from noon to 3:30 p.m. at the gazebo behind the library.
