Judy Lynne’s life will be celebrated at Roberts Creek Hall on Sunday, Jan. 26.

A mother, grandmother, political and community activist, volunteer, arts supporter and loving friend to many, Judith Morrigan Lynne died on Jan. 2 at the age of 76 after living with ovarian cancer for two years. A former chair of the Sunshine Coast Film Society and member of the Threshold Choir, Judy was a committed, compassionate and dynamic presence wherever she lived, from her native Toronto to Ottawa, Vancouver and Gibsons, where she inspired and supported many good causes her last 15 years. Friends have launched a GoFundMe campaign for a commemorative plaque and bench in Gibsons. Any additional funds would go to an Outward Bound scholarship fund Judy started in the name of her late son, Neil Falkner. A memorial service for Judy will be held Sunday, Jan. 26 at Roberts Creek Hall from 1 to 4 p.m.

Crosswalk art

The District of Sechelt is holding a design competition for art to be painted on the crosswalks at the busy Trail Avenue and Cowrie Street intersection. It’s a $2,500 gig for the chosen design and completed installation. There’s a two-stage process to the competition, starting with a vetting process for applying artists. The deadline to enter the first stage is Feb. 10. We’ll have more on this in coming weeks. To download the lowdown, find the link under the What’s New section of the www.sechelt.ca website.

Cold War

A Polish film that scored big at Cannes and caught the eye of the Oscars in 2018, Cold War is a romantic story set in the music scene of post-war communist Poland, and later Paris. Protagonists Wiktor and Zula develop an enduring but rocky relationship marked by wavering infatuation and bitterness. The film was shot so beautifully that the cinematographer got an Academy Award nomination, rare for a black-and-white movie. Sunshine Coast Film Society is screening Cold War at Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m., followed by two screenings at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons the following Monday and Tuesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for Film Society members, $9 for non-members.
