As part of a team of Gibsons Public Market volunteers, Patricia Hetherington adjusts just one of the superb displays at the Rockfish Festival on at the market until the end of this month.

If you want to see some truly imaginative and skilled painting by everyone from local professionals to novice kids, check out the rockfish display at Gibsons Public Market. Several dozen painted plywood rockfish forms were mounted at the market this week as the 2nd Annual Rockfish Festival gets into full swing. “Let your creativity swim” is the tagline for this year’s festival, and the entrants have done just that. Until Sunday, Aug. 30, the paintings are up for silent auction as a fundraiser for the market’s Nicholas Sonntag Marine Education Centre. The market is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Shifting Landscapes

Four award-winning artists have been brought together for a six-week exhibition at FibreWorks Studio and Gallery in Madeira Park. Shifting Landscapes features the work of Anni Hunt, Catherine Nicholls, Kaija Rautiainen, and Michelle Sirois-Silver. “Inspired by nature and their West Coast surroundings, they have created works which pay homage to textile traditions while each establishing their own unique, contemporary style.” The gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or by appointment. Look for the yurts at 12887-12889 Sunshine Coast Highway. The show opens Saturday, Aug. 22 and runs until Oct. 4.

Loads of live music

Singer Deanna Knight hosts her final Sweet Sundays show of the summer on the Garden Stage at her place, Secret Garden B&B Suites, on Aug. 23, and she’s ending the series in style. Knight performs with her Tree-O, and is also bringing up her long-time Vancouver collaborators, Hot Club of Mars, for an afternoon of gypsy swing. Doors at 2 p.m., show 2:30 to about 4:30 p.m. $20 to $30 suggested donation. For safety’s sake, no drop-ins and only 30 reservations are available, at 604-362-1280 or [email protected]

Between 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 23, Slow Sundays at the Roberts Creek gazebo presents The Greatfully Dead Seagulls Quartet, Yvonne Mounsey Trio, and The Billy Hillpicker Band. It’s free.

On the deck at The Clubhouse Restaurant at the Pender Harbour Golf Course on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2 to 5 p.m. and weather permitting, catch singer-songwriter Karl Kirkaldy. $5.
