Honoured with heady praise from the likes of novelist Yann Martel and the late poet Al Purdy, writer Steven Heighton from Kingston, Ontario, presents a reading at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt on Saturday, April 6. Jan’s memorable jams

Coast author Jan DeGrass will read from her new book, The Co-op Revolution: Vancouver’s Search for Food Alternatives, published by Caitlin Press of Halfmoon Bay. Refreshments and books will be available for sale.

They promise it’s rude, but not lewd. “No extreme nudity, just extreme hilarity.” The “male stripper” improv comedy show comes to Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt on Friday, April 5. The two-hour reveal starts 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $34 for the group rate, $39 individual, from brownpapertickets.com.

Child’s Play

He does many finely executed, smaller paintings and illustrations, too. There’s an opening reception for his show, Child’s Play, a “series of illustrations motivated by skateboard and youth culture,” at The Kube in Gibsons on Saturday, April 6 from 6 to 9 p.m. Ben’s show runs until April 30.

The Wife

Glenn Close was nominated for an Oscar for her role in this film, playing the spouse of a long-celebrated novelist. For 40 years she has suppressed her own ambitions in favour of the great writer, played by Jonathan Pryce. But when he is nominated for the Nobel Prize, it all finally gets to be too much as she sees how she’s settled for too little, and the relationship rips apart. A strong supporting cast includes Annie Stark, Harry Lloyd, Elizabeth McGovern and Christian Slater. It screens at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons on Monday, April 8 at 7:30 p.m. Doors at 7 p.m. Sunshine Coast Film Society members $5, non-members $9.

Worth noting

On the bill, the women’s vocal ensemble Reflections; singer/songwriter/guitarist Matt Richards; the J-Tones jazz vocal trio; and pianist Matthew Douglas. Doors at 7 p.m., music at 7:30.
