The holiday season as we usually view it has just passed, but musically, there’s still more to come. MOTET Chamber Choir presents their annual Twelve Days of Christmas concert this Saturday, Jan. 4 at St. Hilda’s Anglican Church in Sechelt, continuing the tradition of celebrating Christmas starting on Dec. 25 and carrying on for nearly another two weeks. MOTET – an acronym for Musicae Opus Totam Ecclesiam Terrestri (the musical work of the whole church on earth) – offers a program of choral and organ music that mixes traditional carols with other sacred music less commonly associated with Christmas. The concert starts at 1 p.m. and admission is by donation. If you happen to be in Vancouver later, you can catch repeat performances at 7 p.m. on Saturday at St. Patrick’s Parish at 2881 Main St., and on Sunday, Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. at Sts. Joachim & Ann on 273rd St. in Aldergrove.

Vocal Intent

The Coast singing ensemble Vocal Intent will perform a concert entitled Good News! at St. Bartholomew’s Church in Gibsons on Sunday, Jan. 5. The group’s six singers will be joined by Ian and Cathy Poole for some eight-voice numbers, and Katherine Hume will provide some stellar piano accompaniment. The ensemble promises an “eclectic mix … arrangements of Morten Lauridsen will rub shoulders with the Kings Singers, and Pentatonix, and yes, there will be some Christmas music.” Doors open at 2:15 for the 3 p.m. performance. Admission is by donation.

Words of Love

Some of Leonard Cohen’s most prolific writing years were spent on the Greek Island of Hydra in the 1960s. That’s also where he met one of his early loves, Marianne Ihlen, the subject of his song So Long Marianne and, no doubt, a few others. Documentary filmmaker Nick Broomfield’s Marianne and Leonard: Words of Love is “a tender, funny and haunting new film which culminates in the [2016] death of Marianne and Cohen’s final message to her.” The Sunshine Coast Film Society is screening the film on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 2 p.m. at Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt, and on Monday, Jan. 6 and Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 7:30 pm at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons. Society members $5, non-members $9. Tickets and annual memberships can be purchased online at www.scfs.ca.

1,000 days

Artist Tzaddi Gordon committed more than two years ago to work on her digital and other art every day without fail, no matter what, and to share what she’d done daily online. On Thursday, Jan. 2 Gordon hit the 1,000-day milestone. It’s not like she has nothing else to do – she makes a living designing websites and clothing. An exhibit of selections of her work, entitled Ripples, will be showing through January at the Gumboot Café in Roberts Creek, and there’s an opening reception Saturday, Jan. 4 from 3 to 5 p.m.

Mark of the Hand

Textiles, fibres and hand-spun yarns from Yvonne Stowell and Marilynn Wiebe will be on weekend public display starting Friday, Jan. 3 through March at Mark of the Hand Studio in Wilson Creek. Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by appointment at 604-780-2834.

Postponed

Renovation delays at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt have prompted a postponement of the intake and reception for the annual Friends of the Gallery (FOG) exhibition. Members are now asked to bring artworks in on Sunday, Jan. 5 for the show, which will run from Jan. 12 to Feb. 3. The opening reception has also been moved back a week and will now be on Sunday, Jan. 12 from 2 to 4 p.m.
