On Saturday afternoon, April 27, Karen Graves and Budge Schachte do their thing again from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Gibsons Public Market.

The choices get tougher on Saturday night. It’s Folksinger’s Eve at High Beam Dreams in Gibsons, with five-piece band Oxlip, led by Vancouver singer Jayne Trimble, who will be premiering her new album; and Bob Sumner, with his six-piece ensemble and some fine hurtin’ music. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 at the usual outlets and online at www.share-there.com, and $35 at the door.

Coast bar-band kings Playback strut out their gotta-get-up-and-dance classic rock starting at 8 p.m. at the Gibsons Legion. $5 for members, $10 for guests.

Legendary Coast music teacher and voice coach Nikki Weber presents two performances of Vocal Variety, a show featuring the male quartet Sh-Boom along with guest soloists Jacquie Allan, Trudi Diening, Patrice Pollack and the J-Tones Trio. They’ll be accompanied by a four-piece band led by pianist Miles Black. There are yet more choices on Sunday, April 28, with the much fun and unique The Kwerks, one of Canada’s top ten bands in CBC’s 2018 Searchlight Challenge, who’ll put on a show at the Pender Harbour Music Society in Madeira Park. “If the Barenaked Ladies were a married couple, they would be The Kwerks,” as one critic put it. Backed by their band, vocalists Laura and Ryan Koch “mix equal helpings of folk and bluegrass with a large dollop of pop-rock.” Showtime is 2 p.m. Tickets are $25 at Harbour Insurance, Strait Music, and online at the PH Music Society website.

Also on Sunday, the Suncoast Concert Band presents its Spring Concert at 2:30 p.m. at the Sechelt Nation Hall. “Conductor Tak Maeda is guaranteed to bring you a lively and entertaining show.” Tickets are $20 for adults, $5 for 12 years and under, from Strait Music, Sechelt; Laedeli Gifts, Gibsons.

Save our sea

If you’re in Madeira Park for the April Tools event, or if you’re there for any reason on Saturday, April 27, also drop by the Harbour Gallery between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. for a one-day event, the Save Our Salish Sea Art Exhibition. Partial proceeds of select works will be donated to the Pender Harbour Ocean Discovery Station (PODS).

Free movie night

All three How to Train Your Dragon movies have been a hoot, but still the leader of the pack in terms of box office was the first film, with nearly $500 million in ticket sales. You and your family can see it for free at Roberts Creek Community Hall at 6:30 p.m. on Monday April 29, thanks to the Roberts Creek Community Association. $3 popcorn and other refreshments will be available.

Looking ahead

Pender Harbour and Gibsons will each host one production of Mother Love, a theatrical presentation with Caitlin Hicks, Gordon Halloran and featured guest Anna Lumiere in celebration of Mother’s Day. “On the theme of celebrating mothers, Hicks will perform the feisty, the funny, the silly and sad characters from a variety of her works … Anna and Gord will pay homage to their mothers with piano and vocals.” Friday, May 3, 7 p.m. at the Pender Harbour School of Music, and Friday May 10, in Gibsons at High Beam Dreams at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the usual outlets and online at www.share-there.com
