Readers of this newspaper know all too well that here on the Sunshine Coast we enjoy captivating scenery all year long. From glorious sunsets to starry nights and from moss-draped forests to wonderful coastal scenery. Many of us also have wonderful photos of the wildlife that surround us.

On Jan. 8, more than 450 photographers from across B.C. and the Yukon were amazed by the photographs that acclaimed wildlife photographer Jeffrey Wu presented during a Zoom presentation on “How to tell a Nature Story.”

The Sunshine Coast Camera Club hosted this presentation to 27 camera clubs. The event was the second in a series of four presentations by different camera clubs featuring world-renowned Canadian photographers.

Wu, whose home is in Burlington, Ont., believes in taking photographs of wildlife to the next level. During his two-hour presentation, he amazed the audience with his incredible photos of wildlife in the Masai Mara National Reserve in west Kenya.

Providing his commentary live from the Kenyan reserve that he knows so well, Wu inspired all camera club members with his approach. Beyond what most local wildlife photographers already know, he pushes the envelope to capture astonishing images of wildlife in all situations. Each of his images clearly tells a story.

Wu’s presentation covered a wide range of bird and animal behaviour, both as close-up shots and in relation to the vastness of the savannah. He is able to portray the reality of living in a natural, wild environment. His knowledge of their habitat allows him to be patient, and to be in the right place at the right time to take rare photos of wildlife in the pursuit of their next meal, teaching their young how to get their own meal, maintaining discipline within the group, and sharing love and affection.
