Jessica Torode-Scott will speak on Whales in our Waters on Friday, Oct. 5 at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt.

Join Jessica Torode-Scott at a Sunshine Coast Natural History Society meeting, Oct. 5, 7:30 p.m. at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre. You will learn about the threats facing whales in our waters, research that is being done to protect them, and how you can get involved in their conservation by reporting your sightings to the B.C. Cetacean Sightings Network. Threatened by vessel collision and disturbance, entanglement, reduction in prey availability and exposure to contaminants, 12 of the 27 species of cetacean and sea turtles in B.C are in perilous conditions.

Torode-Scott is the coordinator of the Cetacean Sightings Network, at the Vancouver Aquarium’s newly formed Coastal Ocean Research Institute. The Sightings Network collects sightings of cetaceans and sea turtles from coastal residents to enhance the scientific knowledge of their abundance, distribution, and habitat use in B.C.

Torode-Scott was born and raised in West Vancouver and was inspired to pursue a career in marine biology after many summer boating trips in Desolation Sound. She holds a BSc in Biology from the University of Victoria and a MSc in Marine and Fisheries Ecology from the University of Aberdeen.

Coffee and cookies will be served. Visitors are welcome.
