Sechelt Library: Closed but not forgotten

These are extraordinary times.

My first month as interim library director took a dramatic turn as we had to take precautionary measures for health and safety reasons and close our library doors to the public.

On March 17, the last day we were open, our circulation count went up to almost 1,950. That’s 1,450 more items taken out than on the same day last year.

This library acts as a hub of services, information, learning and even socialization to a large part of the Sunshine Coast and we all realized the void it would leave in our patrons’ lives when our doors closed. But … closed yes, forgotten no.

Our staff, most working from home, are still working to help enhance the quality of your daily lives if at all possible. Did you know that, from your own home, you could listen to an opera, learn a new language, research your family history, listen to a book being narrated to you or read a book on your phone, computer or KOBO?

We are working hard to increase the availability of these services and are continually adding new purchases to our online library collection. We are also working behind the scenes to improve the look and effectiveness of the website (sechelt.bc.libraries.coop) so it is easier to navigate.

On the home page of our website there are answers to frequently asked questions, links to health authority updates and much more. Some of the online services may require a library card so if you have one, great; if your card has expired we have likely already extended it and if you don’t yet have a membership card please go the website and register for one.

We are here to answer your call and help with anything we can. On behalf of all the Library staff, we are thinking about you and looking forward to your return.
