Scouts wrap up a year of adventure

The Sunshine Coast Scouting movement wrapped up a fun and productive year with some well-deserved awards for youth and leaders.

The Sunshine Coast Scouting movement wrapped up a fun and productive year with some well-deserved awards for youth and leaders.

Five Scouts received their Chief Scout award, which recognizes ability and service and gives the recipients four high school credits. First Gibsons Group Commissioner Robin Woolmer was also awarded the Silver Acorn for his especially distinguished service to Scouting.

Scouting is open to boys and girls from the ages of five years and up. This year, youth participated in camps and events across the Lower Mainland, Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island. One highlight was a trip to Whistler where Scouts had the opportunity to meet gold medal-winning athletes and members of Canadian rock band Hedley. First Gibsons Venturers are off to Scotland this summer to participate in an international Scouting Jamboree.

If you think your child or youth would enjoy learning through outdoor activities, why not join the Scouting movement?

Sunshine Coast area groups have room for youth and adult leaders in all our programs. Beavers are ages five to seven, Cubs eight to 10, Scouts 11 to 14, and Venturers are 14 and over.

To get involved, contact area commissioner Mike Forrest at mike.forrest@sunshinecoastscouts.ca, and look for recruiting booths in the fall.

Special thanks to all the residents and businesses of the Sunshine Coast who supported the Scout fundraising this year. Our youth appreciate it and couldn't participate in camps, training and fun without their community behind them.
