Not for profit societies like the Lions, Elks and Legions are slowly disappearing across the country. These organizations are of great value, especially to small communities, said Ted Taylor, past president of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 112, Pender Harbour. “I wonder, when they’re all gone, who will be left to donate to worthy endeavours in those communities.”

Through member attendance at its weekly meat draws, the Legion in Pender Harbour is able to support worthwhile community endeavours. As well, 10 per cent of the gaming net profits are retained for Legion operations.

On Oct. 25, president Richard Frappier and vice president Sue McDonald presented three cheques to Paola Stewart representing Madeira Park Elementary School’s Parent Advisory Committee. The $500 cheques will be passed on to support the elementary and high school breakfast programs. The third cheque will be used to support the Teens at Risk Program.

Over the past year, donations from gaming have also been given to the PH Pipe Band, Gibsons Pipe Band, Skookumchuck Cadet Corp, Coast String Fiddlers, Pender Harbour Community Food Bank, Pender Harbour Secondary School, two $1,000 bursaries, the Easter Egg hunt and feeding forest fire fighters.
