Granthams Landers celebrated the official reopening of their wharf last Saturday with the annual Granthams community jump.

“Our wharf, the ramp and the dolphin are in better shape and stronger than ever!” according to a speech by Granthams Wharf Association (GWA) president Tony Bonnici at the Granthams Day festivities, which included a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the wharf.

Last December Granthams Wharf was pummelled for hours by waves and debris, including large tree trunks, in a wind storm so powerful BC Hydro called it the most damaging in its history.

Six pairs of support pilings were damaged and sections of the wharf’s platform were shifted by approximately three metres.

The wharf is maintained by the GWA, which raised $32,000 to complete the repairs. Fourteen pilings were installed, beams were replaced under the platform and the platform itself was lifted and slid back and fastened into place. Volunteer work parties replaced the ramp deck, reinstalled the ramp and floats, and cleaned up the area.

Bonnici thanked those who donated time, money and materials to the project. “Our community pulled together and today we are celebrating a wharf that has been rebuilt and reinforced.”

Following the ribbon cutting, residents lined up along the repaired wharf to take a collective plunge into Howe Sound.
