On Sunday, April 28 – for the 30th year in a row – the Sunshine Coast Earth Day Festival will take place. The event will run from noon to 5 p.m. at the Roberts Creek Pier Park – a fantastic day of learning, loving, music, and food.

Earth Day is a special event, not only as the largest civic holiday in the world observed in nearly 200 countries, but it is a special day on the Sunshine Coast. I grew up visiting the Sunshine Coast every summer. I built a deep connection with the ocean and forests of the Salish Sea. My love for the natural world took me around the world, to school, into a career in scuba diving and teaching environmental education.

The way humans interact with the planet creates a big impact. Many of us want to change our impact to work towards a sustainable future. There is no magic sauce for this process. We all come from different places, have different backgrounds and beliefs, are different ages, and have varied levels of agency and capacity to change our behaviours.

Earth Day is a special event that supports individuals in adopting pro-environmental behaviour by letting them celebrate together, feel supported, learn new concepts, practise new skills, gather as a community and most of all feel connected to what inspires them about life on Earth.

As the coordinator of Earth Day this year for the Roberts Creek Community Association, I invite you to come visit more than 50 booths, with representation from many of our amazing local non-profits and small businesses. There will also be great food, live music, and workshops. Leave your car at home and bring your bikes for a free tune-up.
