Affordable prom initiative returns to Chatelech

An initiative launched last year to make prom more affordable and less wasteful is returning to Chatelech Secondary School.

On March 15 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. students are invited to choose a prom dress and get their hair, makeup and nails done by a professional glam squad, all so they can feel, in the lyrics of Lizzo, good as hell.

“They will be totally transformed from their street clothes into gowns,” said Jenni Peters, a Madeira Park hairstylist behind the Dreams Come True event. The transformations are free of charge, thanks to donations from the community.

Peters launched the initiative last year to remove financial barriers to prom, reduce waste and increase outfit options.

“Everything can be expensive, from the dress to the bra,” said Peters before last year’s event. She also wants the event to reduce waste. “There are just so many dresses out there that could be reused rather than sitting in people’s closets,” Peters told Coast Reporter.

The momentum is building from last year. A beauty supplier has provided professional-grade products and nail polish for the girls, and the Sunshine Coast Rotary Club donated $150 for the cause. Most businesses that donated last year are giving again. Seamstresses will be on location to tailor outfits.

With makeovers complete, Pender Harbour photography company Earth and Honey Creative will be on site to take glamour shots. A public makeup tutorial by Sunshine Coast’s Shy Beauty Studio has been scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

“It’s going to be tradition, it’s just how it is. There’s just no question about it,” said Peters. “I think it’s something the Sunshine Coast really needs.”

Those wishing to donate items can bring them to Fossello’s Quality Clothing on Cowrie Street in Sechelt. Items will be accepted until March 9. Shoe sizes from 8 to 11 are in need, as is jewelry and clutches in any colour. Peters is hoping to collect at least 50 new dresses for the event. Swag bags are also being offered this year and businesses are invited to donate.

Students interested in registering can call Peters at 604-399-9072. There is no deadline for registration.

And, Peters said, if any boys need help with their suits, “I have some strings I can definitely pull.”
