Roberts Creek: Liquid sunshine continues

February in the Creek: I haven’t run out of wood yet but the rain is wearing away at bits of my driveway. With help from my friends, it hasn’t done the same to my spirit.

February in the Creek: I haven’t run out of wood yet but the rain is wearing away at bits of my driveway. With help from my friends, it hasn’t done the same to my spirit. Remember to socialize a bit, eh? The weather makes it way too easy to stay in, but it is good for the soul to get out.

Lots happening at the Legion, starting with Friday, Feb. 7 as Simon Paradis entertains with dinner music 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., followed sharply by our monthly trivia challenge, Brain Freeze at 7:45 p.m.

It’s here, the Full Moon Dance Party, Saturday Feb. 8, 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Beatfarmer (Lasqueti Island) will regale the Creek with original productions filled with natural sounds, chanting and organic (orgasmic?) percussion, connecting the listener with the traditions of the past – through the sounds of the future! Along with Beatfarmer is local DJ Granola Guru, purveyor of Tribal Bass Music and filling your eyeballs all night long with layers of light and texture. Attuned to the soundwaves is Simon Haiduk. Members $10, non-members $20.

At the Elementary School gym, Saturday, Feb. 8 is a community favourite, the Valentine’s Family Dance Party with DJ Sugar, 6 to 9 p.m. An annual fundraiser for the Roberts Creek PAC, this event helps add special extras for our elementary kids. Grown-ups $10, kids $5 with a family maximum of $20. Formal dress suggested, snacks and soft drinks available.

There has been dispute on the mountain over the best use of this spectacular resource longer than I have been in the Creek and will continue, I suppose, well after I am gone. Being this close to nature is one of the biggest draws to this place and protecting special parts of it has been a hallmark of this community. As of my writing, the Living Forest Institute and Elphinstone Logging Focus have told me they would like to sit down with the Ministry of Forests, BC Timber Sales, Black Mount Logging, Nicolas Simons and Andreas Tize in the hopes of arriving at an equitable solution for all involved. Things are changing day to day and if you want to keep apprised contact LFI or ELF or both on social media to see where things stand (or fall?).

Roberts Creek is home to many talented artists of all types and those of the musical variety are well represented by this crew. Next week we get to have our time decorated in fine fashion by HM Chronicles (formerly The Heavy Mellow). Original tunes from dark gospel through country rock by this songwriters’ and producers’ collaborative with Matt Watson, Steven Jack, Ray Fulber and Susann Richter (and the odd killer cover). It’s Dark Valentine #2, Friday Feb. 14, HM Chronicles at the Gumboot Café, 8 p.m.

I would love to hear from you: tales of humour, community service, things uniquely Roberts Creek! Help me share some of the things that make this place our home (and so on slow weeks I won’t have to work so hard!) kellybacks@rocketmail.com
