Sunday morning at 6 a.m. I decided to jump out of bed and check out some burning logs at Flume Beach (not its real name). Let’s go over a few things, OK?

Campfires are typically allowed year-round UNLESS they’d been banned during a high-risk period (not at the moment). Fires should be no more than 0.5 m square and below the high-tide mark, at least three metres from private property, wooden structures, tents, vegetation and pretty much anything else that could catch fire. Having a fire is a big responsibility and you cannot leave it unattended! When you’re done with it you’ll need to make sure the fire’s been completely extinguished before leaving the area. A bucket of at least eight litres of water close by (the ocean works fine) and/or a hand tool (such as a shovel) will extinguish the fire properly. If it’s too hot to touch, it’s not out! Apply more water until you can touch it. Please confirm a fire is indeed illegal before you call it in, but if it’s too big or in the wrong place, you know the number for 911, right?
