Once Upon a Creek

Despite threatening rain, this year’s Backwoods Jam hosted by Logan Peat more than lived up to advanced billing.

Despite threatening rain, this year’s Backwoods Jam hosted by Logan Peat more than lived up to advanced billing. In attendance and having fun after a year of grueling competition were many of the world’s best freeride mountain bike athletes performing their breathtaking high-flying tricks for appreciative Coast fans. Among the world class riders were 2018 Red Bull Joyride champion Nicholi Rogatkin, Logan Peat, Robert Creek’s Brandon Semenuk, and Erik Fedko, who took third place at Whistler’s 2018 Crankwerx Joyride. Thirty-year Creek resident Cathrine Fuller has stepped forward as a candidate for Area D’s SCRD regional director. Among her Coast concerns are water and waste management and “development steam-rolling towards us from Vancouver. We have to be vigilant,” she says. Her website is www. iaminRC.ca, email [email protected].

A reminder from Roberts Creek Community Association president Scott Avery that the RCCA AGM will be held Sept. 26. He’s inviting new board candidates to step forward. “Anyone over 16 and yearning to fundraise, oversee membership or with secretary/treasurer skills willing to transition [from the present board] would be nice,” he said. Minimum three hours a month for board meetings. “Spending any additional time – spearheading a community engagement project for example – is up to you,” he said.

Also seeking new members is the Roberts Creek Healthcare Auxiliary. “Even though we’re small, we’re a might to be reckoned with when it comes to our fund-raising skills,” says board member Christine Piasta. All funds raised by their many projects, including a plant and bake sale on Earth Day, and sales at the Roberts Creek Christmas craft fair, go to Sechelt Hospital to help keep health care on the Coast vibrant. Members are active in the Thrift Store, the hospital gift shop and the Loan Cupboard. But this go-getting group “desperately needs new members,” Christine says.

“If not, we think we’ll have to fold,” with members joining other branches. The RC Auxiliary meets Tuesday Sept. 11 at 10:30 a.m. in Roberts Creek Legion, hopefully not for the last time. For more information and to join, call 604-886-4214.
