Once Upon a Creek

Roberts Creek

With August winding down, it’s time to thank all those who’ve helped this summer to make the Creek the special place it is.

Heartfelt thanks from the Roberts Creek Community Association to all volunteers, vendors and spectators who made Creek Daze’s 40th anniversary such a success. Thanks to the Higgeldy Piggeldy parade participants, the amazing musicians at the mandala and the Blast from the Past Creeker stories that added a lovely touch of nostalgia. Special thanks to Jean’s Organics for providing food for the volunteers and to the awesome folks who created the 1978 Creek Daze story board, says organizer Lesley Roberts. Thanks to readers who made this year’s library book sale the most successful in several years.

With Aug. 26 and Sept. 2 the last two Slow Sundays in the Creek, it’s time to thank organizers Ed Lands and Graham Walker for promoting the Creek and presenting music and entertainment for all ages, all summer long. This Sunday, Aug. 26 at 1 p.m. Sarah Schachte-Marshal will play original and covers and at 2 p.m. Reel Time plays upbeat, jazzy Celtic tunes. On Sunday, Sept. 2 at 1 p.m. the Ukulele Ladies Quartet is featured and at 2 p.m. Budge Schachte on guitar with Karen Graves. As usual on Slow Sundays there’ll be dancing and singing along, a horseshoe pitch and a tent with board games for the kids and perhaps Graham blowing bubbles. It all happens at the gazebo behind the library. The music is mostly from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s and there are vendors, too, offering fudge, curried food and organic chocolates. Grandmothers and GrandOthers have been there every Sunday and you’ll also likely find a Gaia’s Fair Trade products booth, Rose’s exotic clothes and jewelry, the Creek’s own Eco Freako all-natural products and perhaps the Roberts Creek Historical Society posters displayed outside on the library’s back wall.

Thanks also to all those who attended the Roberts Creek Farm Gate Market’s 10th anniversary, says organizer Tawha Barbarosa. A special thanks to the Brothers in Farm who “shook the market with their fun music and good vibes.” The Farm Gate Market sells local, fresh, organically grown farm goods every Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m. in the parking lot on Roberts Creek Road near Highway 101. You can’t miss it.

It’s the weekend after Whistler’s Crankworx, and you’re invited to Logan Peat’s Backwoods Jam at Coast Gravity Park. There’s a rumour that Roberts Creek’s own Brandon Semenuk, arguably the most famous freestyle mountain bike rider in the sport, will be there. There’ll be some of Whistler’s Red Bull Joyride participants and perhaps 2018 Joyride winner and slopestyle triple crown winner Nicholi Rogatkin. What better place than the Sunshine Coast to relax and chill? The family friendly Backwoods Jam goes Saturday, Aug. 25 from 1 to 4 p.m. with downhill races in the morning.

Happening Sunday Aug. 26 in the Creek from noon to 6 p.m. is a fundraiser for the @redcrosscanada wildfire fund to help folks affected by this summer’s many wildfires. Salon Fade ‘n’ Dye is providing “quick services” (braids, neck/bang trims, glitter extensions) for $10 each and there will be a $5 draw to win amazing prizes.

Donations are still urgently needed to add to the $38,000 so generously donated in the last few months in large and small amounts to replace the Hall’s old roof. The price tag for the new roof is $90,000 and any donation will be thankfully received. Donations can be sent to gofundme.com/robertscreekhall-roof or mail to RCCA, PO Box 261, Roberts Creek, V0N 2W0.

Also gratefully received will be your September Roberts Creek community news. Send before noon Mondays to creek@coastreporter.net
