Once Upon a Creek

Roberts Creek

The dog days of summer are here but Creekers haven’t been dodging them.

The Creek has been hopping with Slow Sundays in the Creek (every Sunday noon to 4 p.m., musicians and offerings of jams, jellies, candy, etc.), the 2018 mandala painting and celebration in July and now, just around the corner, the 40th anniversary of Creek Daze on Saturday, Aug. 11. This year’s Creek Daze Blast from the Past celebrations begin with the traditional Higgledy Piggledy parade winding its leisurely way at 11 a.m. from the Hall to the mandala. MC Chris Hergesheimer will open the festivities at noon at the mandala where contemporary musicians and also bands from Roberts Creek’s past will play. A sample: The Ranters (musicians from the Good Old Daze playing rock from back in the day); Dilly Dally and the Pony Tails – reggae from Creekers; Michael Lacoste – looping music deluxe; Sing You Sinners – sweet songs with steel guitar; Natalie Wilhelm; Ulla and more. Between acts, Chris will read out family memories of Roberts Creek. There’ll be vendors, too, kids dancing to the music and general fun. Early birds will find the annual Roberts Creek community library giant book and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at, well, at the library.

Higgledy Piggledy parade participants (entries always welcome) are asked to gather at the Hall at 10 a.m. Parade organizer Rhoda says she’s in need of volunteers to help with general organizing duties on parade day. Contact her at rustyhingeinrobertscreek.com. Also searching for Creek Daze volunteers (urgent!) is Jan Brinton who has a collection of Roberts Creek banners and flags from past years she’d love to see in the parade including the famous gumboot and Gumboot Nation banners. The problem, she says, is that they’re furled and need poles for the banner carriers. Can anyone help? Also needed are strong, young arms to carry the banners in the parade. “Many of us old warriors are in our 70s and 80s and its a bit too much carrying the flags and banners,” Jan says. If you can help, please contact her at [email protected] or 604-886-2883. Volunteers are also still needed for general Creek Daze duties, Creek Daze head Lesley Roberts says. She can be found at [email protected] or pop in to Eco-Freako in the Creek to offer your help.

Creek Daze continues Sunday, Aug. 12 with Slow Sundays in the Creek, 12 to 4 p.m. at the gazebo park behind the library.

See you there!
