Great news! Two secret donors have stepped forward and offered to match dollar for dollar (up to $3,000 maximum) from now until Feb. 14 any donation given to the Raise the Roof campaign to replace our beloved Roberts Creek Hall’s aging roof – a great opportunity for the rest of us to contribute before Feb. 14 and a wonderful Valentine’s Day gift to the community. Any amount will be gratefully received at www.gofundme.com/robertscreekhall-roof or send a cheque made out to Roberts Creek Community Association, 1309 Roberts Creek Road, Roberts Creek, B.C. V0N 2W2. You can also contact the Hall at 604-885-2715. Thank you so much for your generous offer, Secret Donors, and for all contributions.

This is Family Literacy Week and Sandy Middleton, Literacy Outreach Coor-dinator for the Sunshine Coast Literacy Coalition, says Mind of a Snail, the hugely popular shadow puppet company, originally from the Coast, is returning to the Roberts Creek Hall for two shows. “Last year the Hall was full to overflowing,” she said. Free shows are being offered Firday, Jan. 19, at 11 a.m. and again at 4 p.m.

In addition, on Saturday Jan. 27 at 1:30 p.m. at the Seaside Centre in Sechelt there will be a drumming and song circle for all ages. “It’s a way to come and be part of the community,” Middleton said.

You can reach Sandy at 604-885-9310.

This Tuesday, Jan. 23, the Arbutus Sounds Chorus and Sweet Adelines International will meet as usual at 6:45 p.m. at Roberts Creek School. Their successful Christmas concerts behind them, the group is now preparing for their May concert. The assistant director is Roberts Creeker Connie Johnston. The group sings in four-part harmony, a capella, and welcomes new members who love to sing, all ages from teens on up. Phone Jean at 604-886-3298. “We’re a friendly group; come and give us a try,” she said.

This Thursday, Jan. 25 and on the last Thursday of every month (except December, July and August) anyone living or holidaying on the Coast or just passing through who is an Air Canada Pionair or Air Canada retiree is invited to coffee at 10:30 a.m. at the Sunshine Coast Golf Club in Roberts Creek. “Anyone who once worked for other Air Canada airlines such as Canadian Pacific, Pacific Western, or Eastern Provincial is also welcome,” said Jim Lafferty of Air Canada Pionairs. Buy your own coffee. Reminiscing is free.

Also this Thursday, Jan. 25, Coast Car Co-op is kicking off its fundraising year. Rides are offered from 5 to 10 p.m. in Roberts Creek or Gibsons. Tickets are $25. Phone 778-374-3092 or coastcarco-op.ca and follow the prompts. Matt McLean, executive director of the Co-op, says the Sunshine Coast’s car share is planning many more fundraisers this year to help “burn off our debt.” Plans for this Thursday are to pick up anywhere in Gibsons or Roberts Creek between 5 and 6 p.m. and begin driving people home around 9:30 p.m.

Our Roberts Creek Legion is off and running this year with multiple high energy shows. Playing this Friday, Jan. 19 at 8 p.m., are the Hedks, a “thrashy rock and roll duo” with guests Washboard Road, The Locals. On Saturday, Jan. 20 there’s the Burying Ground, live at 9 p.m. and on Friday, Jan. 26 a dinner show with Greg Willy. Kitchen opens at 6 p.m. but get there early because the kitchen closes if they run out of food! Coming also is Funky Friday with the Funkdealers and Vinz Clortho and, on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 9 p.m., Latin Funk 4. For more info on upcoming events, see the RC Legion’s informative website at robertscreeklegion.ca/events.

And now for a wee sampling of politics:

Our Roberts Creek representative to the Sunshine Coast Regional District, Mark Lebbell, has locked horns with SCRD Chair Bruce Milne (also Mayor of Sechelt) over diminishing water supplies on the Sunshine Coast. He says Milne’s declaration that the Chapman Lake expansion is “dead” is “extremely concerning.” Note also that Chapman Lake is a provincial matter. See Lebbell’s full argument on his website at robertscreekmark.com. Over to you, Nicholas Simons!
