Happy New Year, everyone!

Thanks to all participants in the Polar Express Light Tour 2016 from the Seniors Initiative and Pender Harbour. Business Winners: First place EarthFair Store, second Community Hall, and third Oak Tree Market. Home Resident Winners: First place Tanya and Richard Massullo, second Virginia Antilla, third Rob Stigiltz and Cindy Schroeder, fourth Grant and Joy Ellert, fifth Donna and Bruce Brown, honourable mention to Grace Donahee.

Seniors Initiative Group has a week full of great activities at the Community Hall. Tuesday join Walking, an easy-paced exercise program with walking-based moves, 10:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, come carpet bowling, 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday at Harbourside Friendships starting at 10:30 a.m., guest speaker will be Kathleen Thomas, RN, Geriatric Mental Health Nurse. Lunch is served at noon. Friday is chair yoga, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. No mat yoga at this time.

An intergenerational activity with high school students will be held Monday, Jan. 9 with the topic Learning About Facebook, 11:28 to 12:28 p.m. at the secondary school.

Pender Harbour Music Society presents Dawn Pemberton, “Canada’s new queen of soul” on Sunday, Jan. 15, at 2 p.m. In 2015 she was part of the talented band with the unique name The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer that won the Western Canadian Music Awards in three categories for their release A Real Fine Mess. Thanks to her strong vocal technique and true emotional connection, Pemberton’s voice is a perfect fit for the complementary worlds of R & B, gospel, funk and jazz fusion. Robbie Burns Night on Friday, Jan. 20 will feature the traditional dinner fare with entertainment by the Coast Fiddlers and the combined Pender Harbour and Gibsons Pipe Bands. Tickets are at the Legion and Harbour Insurance.

Sunshine Coast BCSPCA has been busy this new year with the arrival of dogs seized during the cruelty investigation (over 30 animals in total) in Squamish. Donate your refundables at GRIPS, drop some change in boxes at IGA and Madeira Park Vet, or contact me for cash or cheque donations for our hardworking shelter.
