Halfmoon Bay: Scenic Redrooffs Road - take it slow and enjoy the views

Halfmoon Bay
HMB parade
PARADE IN THE BAY: Staff at Halfmoon Bay Elementary School held a parade on Friday, May 8 to spread some cheer in the neighbourhood. Decorated cars played music as the parade rolled down the streets of Welcome Woods, with residents sitting along the road waving and cheering. Almost every staff member participated and students made signs and blew bubbles. One staff member described it as “a very heart warming moment for all of us.”

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful week and long weekend. We had a little bit of everything from showers to rain to sunshine with pleasant temperatures. With the parks, trails and beaches reopening, hopefully you were able to get out and enjoy your beautiful surroundings.

Now that BC Parks have been reopened for day use, we can enjoy our beloved trails, paths and picnic areas again. One of our amazing parks in Halfmoon Bay is Sargeant Bay Provincial Park. Most recently, dolphins and sea lions were seen in the bay along with seals, various sea birds, ducks and water fowl. You can take a short walk along the trail between a vibrant and busy wetland and the ocean with a rocky shore. Locals and visitors enjoy this area on a regular basis, and all are reminded to take extra care at this time of year. Many birds and wildlife are nesting and raising their young so be sure to stay on the trails and keep your four-legged, furry friends on a leash. Making sure the area is kept safe and clean will allow all of us to continue enjoying this incredible place.

The Halfmoon Bay Community Association has advised that the Annual HMB Country Fair is cancelled for 2020. This would have been the 54th year for the Country Fair, which has always been a very popular event for locals and visitors. With the COVID-19 restrictions and closures, the board could not continue organizing and planning the event with no confirmed date for reopening the hall or gathering in the park. They will know more in the coming weeks and months and hopefully can host an event in the fall. Also, Shari Ulrich concert ticket holders are reminded that there is an opportunity to receive a refund this Saturday, May 23 at Coopers Green Park. Terry and Toni will be there from 10 a.m. until noon. If you have any questions, please contact Terry directly at teknight@telus.net.

The scenic and popular Redrooffs Road runs right through Halfmoon Bay. Along this pleasant and quiet neighbourhood road, there are a few roadside booths to visit. The Rustic Rooster, Gidora’s Garden and a new plant/seed stand (no name) have goodies, vegetables and various items to purchase. So if you happen to travel along this way, be sure to take it slow and check them out. Of course, the views along the way are pretty spectacular too!

Garden tip of the week:

Kym from Kym’s Plants: “Early clematis such as montana can be pruned now to contain their size so next year’s blooms are set in mid to late May.”
