Elphinstone: Update on beach cleanup

Correction to my last column: the lovingly restored house owned by Hans and Charlene Penner at the northwest corner of King and Chaster is not the King home.

Correction to my last column: the lovingly restored house owned by Hans and Charlene Penner at the northwest corner of King and Chaster is not the King home. They lived across the street at the northeast corner! Thanks to Murray King who grew up there for this correction. He tells me that the house now owned by the Penners belonged to the Hicks family and Murray thinks it was built around 1930 while theirs was built a year or two later.

Cedar Grove PAC will be hosting a Lantern Festival on March 14 at 5 p.m. with lanterns made by students from recycled jars. There will be games including a scavenger hunt, live music, food and drink. It’s a community event and all are invited. All funds raised will support the Cedar Grove PAC.

With the February meeting cancelled due to snow, the Elphinstone Community Association hopes the March meeting on Wednesday, March 13 at 7 p.m. at the Frank West Hall will go ahead without a hitch! Reports from committees, our director and Gord Bishop will be on hand to talk about the beach cleanup. With 36 bags of garbage and Styrofoam collected from almost 3 km of beach front, Dolphin Marine plans to pick up the giant totes by barge. Coast Bins will then collect it up from the marina and arrange transport to the landfill.

Unfortunately, the Stryofoam cannot be recycled as it is considered contaminated. With the federal government currently working with the provinces to develop a national strategy about plastic pollution in our waters (bc.liberal.ca/bc-draft-policy-resolutions-2017) – now’s the time to write to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans [email protected] and the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change [email protected] urging them to ban Styrofoam in docks and floats. Be sure to copy our MP Pamela Goldsmith-Jones at [email protected].

I’m always impressed by the numbers of people doing their recycling when I go to the Gibsons Recycling Depot – that place is a beehive! But I digress – with the problem of our plastic no longer being accepted by China and with the huge amount of it we’re dutifully taking to be recycled, why aren’t we making it (among other items) into plastic planks and supports for use in docks and floats? Yes, here in Canada!

International Women’s Day potluck celebration will be held at Roberts Creek Hall on Friday, March 8 at 5 p.m. Music and good company! Have you ever wanted to rent Frank West Hall or Chaster House? Rates are reasonable – contact Linda Horsman at www.scrd.ca/Halls. One more link: Director McMahon’s February newsletter is available at everythingelphinstone.ca.
