Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Feb. 5 to Feb. 11:
On Feb. 5, a Coast resident received a phone call from someone purporting to represent the Police Association of Canada fundraising for an anti-bullying campaign. The caller asked for a donation of several hundred dollars.
The resident advised she would make a modest donation and provided the caller with her credit card number. Afterwards, the resident realized this was likely a scam and a call to the telephone number provided confirmed this, as the number did not go through.
The resident called her bank and cancelled the credit card. Police warn the public to always check the legitimacy of cold callers claiming to be working for a charity before making any sort of donation.
Overnight on Feb. 6, a vandal spray painted graffiti on a building in the 5900 block of Shoal Road in Sechelt. The file is still under investigation.
On Feb. 6, police attended a single-vehicle collision in the 400 block of Marine Drive in Gibsons, after a truck drove up a walkway and struck the side of a building. The unhurt driver, who was not impaired, advised he had been reaching for his seat belt when his foot slipped off the brake and onto the gas pedal, causing the vehicle to lurch forward and into the building. The building received minor damage, but the truck was heavily damaged and was towed from the scene.
On Feb. 7, RCMP, the Roberts Creek fire department and BC Ambulance attended a report of a vehicle fire on Highway 101 near Roberts Creek Provincial Park.
A motorist had noted that the vehicle in front of her was emitting smoke from the back. The motorist honked and yelled to get the other driver's attention until the driver finally pulled over and realized his truck was on fire. Fire crews attended to put out the fire. It is unknown at this point what started the fire.
On Feb. 9, police witnessed a vehicle speeding more than 20 km over the posted speed limit on Highway 101 near Pratt Road in Gibsons. The vehicle was pulled over and the driver, who admitted to having consumed alcohol an hour prior to driving, was given a roadside alcohol-screening test. The driver received a warn result and was issued a three-day immediate roadside prohibition as well as a violation ticket for speeding. The driver's licence was also seized and his vehicle was towed.
On Feb. 10, police attended a single-vehicle roll over at the intersection of North Road and Cemetery Road in Gibsons, after a delivery truck lost control on the slushy road surface.
The driver over-corrected and slid into the curb, which caused the vehicle to tip over. The driver was unhurt, but a large number of baked goods were damaged in the incident. The inexperienced driver was warned about speeding relative to conditions.
On Feb. 10, police attended a single-vehicle collision on Highway 101 near Largo Road in Roberts Creek, after the driver lost traction on the slushy road, over-corrected and went completely off road.
The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital for assessment. The driver was warned that when there are poor road conditions, driving the speed limit is actually contrary to the Motor Vehicle Act and she could be charged with speeding relative to conditions.
On Feb. 10, police attended a single-vehicle collision on Highway 101 near Jack Road in Roberts Creek, after an eastbound vehicle lost control on the icy road and slid across the highway into the ditch. Neither driver nor passenger suffered any injuries, but the vehicle had to be towed.
On Feb. 10, a shoplifter was reported at a business in the 900 block Venture Way in Gibsons. The suspect, described as a tall, thick-set Caucasian male with olive skin, was wearing a blue sweatshirt and grey sweat pants. The suspect is believed to have stolen two boxed bottles of Johnny Walker Premium Scotch. Staff attempted to detain the male, but he fled and got into the passenger seat of a red sports car.
Police are reviewing surveillance footage.
