Const. Todd Bozak is pictured with the drugs seized during a traffic stop in Gibsons on Feb. 17.

A 41-year-old Powell River man is facing a drug trafficking charge after a bust by Sunshine Coast RCMP Traffic Services during a traffic stop in Gibsons.

According to RCMP, the driver was pulled over for speeding on Feb. 17 just before noon on North Road in Gibsons.

"The driver was arrested after the officer detected an odour of marijuana in the vehicle," said Cpl. Steve Chubey in a news release. "A search of the vehicle was conducted and a large quantity of marijuana bud was located and seized."

Chubey said the driver was arrested for possession (of marijuana) for the purpose of trafficking. Police seized approximately 16 kg of marijuana bud, along with the vehicle.

The suspect has been released on a promise to appear in Sechelt provincial court on April 30. He was also issued a violation ticket for speed against highway sign and use of electronic device.
