School District No. 46 (SD46) invites you to nominate that inspirational individual in your life for the Frances Fleming Award for Inspirational Achievement before Friday, Feb. 28.

The award is given out each year to someone affiliated with SD46 as either an employee, parent, student or community member who is known for motivating others to strive for their best, whatever their barriers may be.

The nominee must also have made a significant contribution to the community, to individuals or groups, be a respected leader in the community and be a mentor and friend to many.

Above all, SD46 said in a press release, the winner must inspire achievement in the school community.

Frances Fleming was known as an enthusiastic, intelligent and eloquent teacher who inspired all of her students, colleagues and community members to discover their true potentials.

She passed away in 2004, but not before becoming the first female administrator of a large B.C. secondary school and the first female superintendent of a B.C. school district. She also wrote and developed courses specific to local needs that gained ministry approval, wrote and published many books, helped build a new library in Sechelt and helped Pender Harbour Secondary become the smallest fully accredited B.C. School with the best provincial grade 12 results.

Fleming was so well respected that she was called upon by the Ministry of Education for her wisdom and expertise, becoming assistant superintendent for the Special Education Branch until her retirement.

"Impressive as France Fleming's official accomplishments and awards are, there is another level of recognition that truly reflects her ability to inspire others," a press release from SD46 said.

"She was never daunted by historical circumstances or unjust cultural mores, but turned her intelligence to seeking and finding practical, workable solutions. Frances' gift was the ability to find and provide perspective for any of life's challenges."
