Students to host bike events

The mountain bike operations (MBO) program students from Capilano University are hosting a series of bike-related events this month as part of their events management course.

The mountain bike operations (MBO) program students from Capilano University are hosting a series of bike-related events this month as part of their events management course.

Students unveiled the new Kinnikinnick Trail on Wednesday, March 13, and will host the St. Patty's Trail Day this Saturday, March 16, the Sechelt Pump Track media launch on March 20, and the Sprockids Dig'n Ride on March 24.

"I'm very excited to see the students' hard work pay off in organizing these community-focused events," said course instructor Caroline Dépatie. "Not only is it a great opportunity for the students to get hands-on experience with event management, but it also benefits the Sunshine Coast community, as all events will be free of charge and community oriented."

On Saturday the St. Patty's Trail Day will take place at Connor Park in Halfmoon Bay. Starting at 10 a.m., there will be professionally led trail maintenance in the surrounding area, followed by draw prizes and free lunch, and finished off with guided mountain bike rides through the Connor Park trail network.

The Sechelt Pump Track media launch will take place in Sechelt on March 20 at 1 p.m. This event will serve as the official ribbon-cutting for the newly constructed pump track. The event will raise awareness of the new facility.

The new facility will then be open for use starting at 2 p.m. This pump track will expand the resources cyclists have access to on the Sunshine Coast. The location of the track is on the east side of Trail Avenue at Neptune Street under the power lines. Prior to the development, the area was dormant and unused. In the past there was a BMX track in the 1970s and 1980s.

This was a community project that let the MBO program give back to a community that lets them live and ride for eight months at a time. The entire process was aided by community members; without their support the facility would not have been developed.

Until the park is officially opened to the public, the public is asked to stay off of the facility.

Finally, the Sprockids Dig'n Ride in Sprockids Park in Gibsons will be held on Sunday, March 24. Starting at 10 a.m. groups will be led to install new Sunshine Coast Regional District trail signage throughout the park. Lunch will be provided and served by the Gibsons Lions Club, and the day will be capped off by a jump demonstration by local talented riders.

The Cap U students hope to see you out at one of their events in March.
