Could they be the next Williams sisters?
Only time will tell, but Halfmoon Bay sisters Lorren and Heather Benko are well on their way to successful tennis careers after an impressive 2013.
Lorren, age 10, and Heather, age nine, played their end of the season tennis tournament of Future Stars Tour (FST) last month.
FST is progressive tennis competition for players under 10 organized by Tennis Canada. Throughout the year, players participate in tournaments organized by various tennis clubs in Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.
In the girls U10 category, Heather won first place and Lorren's efforts brought her second place overall in leaderboard results.
Both Lorren and Heatherwere also selected to participate in U12 and U10 provincial training programs that are held on weekends at UBC tennis facilities and Burnaby's Fortius Sports and Health Centre.
Tennis and fitness training that they receive there, under the supervision of many dedicated staff from Tennis Canada and Tennis BC, will help them in thorough development of their overall skills and fitness abilities. Staff includes national coach Oded Jacob, manager of competitive training Dimitri Penchev, and Sarah Kadi, director of high performance, to name a few.
Lorren and Heather, who attend Halfmoon Bay Elementary School, started playing tennis recreationally three years ago. They train year-roundat Suncoast Racquet Club in Sechelt with Jacques Joyal who, within a short period of 10 months, helped them so improve their game that at the 2013 provincials they both advanced into second round in girls' U10 singles and finished second in U10 girls doubles.
