The Ya Yas women's soccer team placed third at the 51st annual Totem soccer tournament in Victoria over the Easter long weekend.

The Ya Yas played four games and started out slow, dropping their first games to the Alert Bay Thunderettes, moving the team into the consolation bracket, so the best the Ya Yas could play for was third.

The Ya Yas played two games on Saturday and won both, beating Cowichan in a shootout then beating the Alert Bay 96ers 5-0 in the afternoon.

With the two straight wins, the young, fast and talented Ya Yas entered into the Sunday morning consolation final against the Musqueam Blues at Royal Athletic Stadium.

The sun was out and Molly Joe was playing in net in an all-around glorious morning. Upon arrival at the stadium, the well-trained and experienced Blues were already well into their warm-up. They looked seasoned and determined and have won this tourney many times before.

When the whistle started the game, the Ya Yas hit a fast pace. Young players such as the Bridges sisters, Mariah Paul, Jazmin Feschuk and Kayla Muir played like machines.

Any wave of offence that the Blues initiated was stopped at the mark by the Ya Yas young, fast defensive line. The offence was quarterbacked by veteran Eliza Johnson and implemented by Alvina Paul and Kerri Dixon who scored the two goals.

Ya Yas dominated the game and left the stadium with a 2-0 victory, their shiny trophy and car loads of ecstatic Sechelt fans.

The funny moment was when the older players and fans were cheering and celebrating and the younger players finished the game like it was another game played. No big deal. One day they may realize that playing and winning in the Royal Athletic Stadium is the pinnacle of most people's soccer careers.
