The weather was perfect for the 2014 edition of the Sechelt Canada Day mile July 1 — summer sun without the high heat and humidity of last year.

Defending champ and Chatelech Eagles team member Jordan Wilson of Sechelt had to run hard to stay ahead of Roberts Creek’s Mason Gregory, who was the top local male in this year’s April Fool’s Run. The two finished just four seconds apart with the effort showing clearly on Wilson’s face at the line.

Wilson’s 4:52 was 18 seconds faster than last year. Chatelech teammate Alex Nightingale of Halfmoon Bay stuck to his own race pace for a solid third place overall, also improving 18 seconds over last year. Following Nightingale were two more Chatelech teammates, Elliot Wadge and Sean Parfitt, to round out the top five, all under 5:30.

First woman across the line and seventh overall was Marisa Alps of Halfmoon Bay in 6:30, just nine seconds ahead of Sechelt’s Cathy McLeod. Halfmoon Bay’s Dawne Clancy took third spot for the women.
