Volleyball camp a huge success

SC Spirit of Excellence recently hosted another successful volleyball camp for Coast elementary and high school players at Elphinstone Secondary School in Gibsons.

A successful volleyball camp was held on Friday, Oct. 24 at Elphinstone Secondary School.

Head coach Mark Sauer and Birgit Breuer taught 18 students in grades 5 and 6 volleyball skills — with great success — by using giant, light beach balls. The kids loved the colours and the slow speed, which enabled them to position themselves on the court before playing the slowly floating ball.

More and more younger students are eager to start this beautiful sport in elementary school. Grade 8 and 9 students enjoyed a high-energy session learning serving accuracy and advanced systems.

Sauer is a high school teacher at St. Georges School in Vancouver where he has coached senior volleyball for 25 years. He will also run another session of U14 boys volleyball with SC Spirit of Excellence on Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Roberts Creek.

Players who wish to attend club tryouts with the local volleyball club in early December can join a prep course for U14 and U15 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Roberts Creek Elementary School gym.

Younger players in grades 5, 6 and 7 can improve their skills in a volleyball course that will run for four Fridays starting on Nov. 7 at Cedar Grove Elementary School.
