United shuts out South Burnaby

Sports in Brief

Sunshine Coast United earned a huge 1-0 win against the visiting South Burnaby Dog Pile last Saturday, Nov. 8 in rep soccer action

Goalie Cameron Wentzell slammed the door closed on every attempt South Burnaby tried.

These two teams were very well matched, and the fast pace kept all players on their toes.

With strong passing, forwards Callum Christiansen, Brett Bjornson and Kai Maniwa Brodie kept the pressure on, but it was Taiyo Blackwell with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game who brought it home.

Mid-fielder Owen Watson, as always, set the ball on fire with his goal and corner kicks. Sierra Ryden, Julian Woodin, Colby Elson and Alex Hart proved to be unbeatable on defence.

United’s next challenge was at the West Vancouver Remembrance Day tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 11. Results were not available at press time.

Doerksen sets PB time

Gibsons’ Kim Doerksen set a personal time of 2:36:04 at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon on Oct. 19.

She was the ninth female and third overall Canadian female to finish in an amazing performance. According to Sunshine Coast Athletics running club spokesperson Teresa Nightingale, Doerksen ran most of the way with Kelowna’s Natasha LeBeaud and was only 30 seconds behind her at the finish. Lanni Marchant was first Canadian female runner to cross the finish line at 2:31.
