United draw with Hurricanes

Rep soccer

Sunshine Coast United FC started November with an away game against the VAFC Hurricanes, battling to a 2-2 draw last weekend.

The Hurricanes opened the scoring with a quick one early in the first half. A short time later, with some good passing, Taiyo Blackwell sent one in the net, tying it up.

With the sun shining and energy high, United controlled the ball most of the second half. The Hurricanes scored, making it 2-1, but with quick passing and pure determination, Owen Watson hammered one high into the net to tie up the game.

The last 10 minutes were intense with near misses from Julian Woodin, Brett Bjornson and Alex Hart.

Next home game for United is this Saturday, Nov. 8 at 1:30 p.m. at Picadilly Park.

U16 boys

Scorpions earned another decisive victory with a 3-0 shutout of visiting Killarney Gladiators last weekend.

Goalie Kieran Peel who, with a force that could not be reckoned, shut down every Gladiator attempt to break through.

Flanked by fearless wingers Ben Luporini and Wyatt Baldwin, who conquered all comers, Scorpion mid-fielder Xavier Benjamin and forward Liam Rankin leaned in, spotted the Gladiators weakness, and Liam unleashed with a graceful furor of biblical proportions and secured the Scorpions’ first goal.

Desperately seeking retribution, the Gladiators fought back to no avail. The stunning determination with which Finn Rogers and Jake Simpkins brought to the outside defence mightily bolstered centrebacks Jordan Kamerle and Phillip Fogarty.

Mid fielders Evan Griffin, Duncan Armstrong and Bryce Pierre carried the Scorpions’ momentum forward where Duncan delivered on a penalty kick advancing the lead to 2-0. Liam rounded out the scoring in the second half.

U12 girls

The winning streak continued for the Sunshine Coast Storm as they picked up a solid 3-0 win in West Vancouver last Sunday.

Despite the rain, the girls played with enthusiasm and skill and dominated the whole game.

The first half saw mid-fielder Leela Fernandez score from outside the box on a beauty shot and shortly after Teagan Sweet was able to put one away after a scramble at the net that left West Van’s keeper out of position.

Scoring chances came often with Mya Yakasovich playing a great game in centre midfield and sending many through balls for the speedy Clara Pashkewych.

Faye Duffy and Paige Clucas also had solid passing games and created many opportunities for scoring. As usual, solid defending from Piper Goerzen, Olivia Tulk and Ella Campbell were all solid.

In the second half Leela Fernandez scored again after a great corner kick from Koenn Sauer created a scramble in front of the net.

Pippa Boothroyd and Mary Wood were able to record another shutout and Pippa’s diving save in the last minutes of the second half left West Vancouver shaking their heads in disbelief.
