SEPTEMBER

• The numbers were up again at the fifth annual Sunshine Coast Hockey School hosted by David Arduin and his team of Sunshine Coast coaches.

• The Sechelt Arena was packed for Arena Bowl, a very successful pickleball tournament hosted by the SCRD and the local pickleball association.

• Dragon boat teams had a successful weekend at the Steveston Regatta with one team bringing back a silver medal.

• Senior athletes from the Sunshine Coast put in stellar performances in the pool, on the track and in the gym at the BC Senior Games in Langley.

OCTOBER

• Family and friends packed the Seymour Golf and Country Club to honour Alvie Thompson for his lifetime commitment to the game of golf. The PGA of B.C. honoured Thompson with its 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award.

• Real or scripted, All-Star Wrestling proved to be a big draw in Sechelt Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Sechelt Indian Band Community Hall.

• Pender Harbour’s Heather Cranston became a hall of fame athlete.

Cranston and her fellow New Westminster Doc’s Blues women’s softball teammates were inducted into the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame.

NOVEMBER

• The Elphinstone senior boys basketball team rose to the challenge on Wednesday night, Oct. 29 hosting the Harlem Crowns in an entertaining exhibition game.

• Michelle Miller (nee MacDonald) was crowned Miss Las Vegas after she won her first figure body-building competition since she moved to the U.S.

• Closer to home, Mikayla Custance finished her figure body-building year, winning her bikini class at the Sandra Wickham Fall Classic.

• UVic cross country runner Kendra Pomfret was awarded with a national community service award.

• The U11 United rep boys soccer team went undefeated at a Remembrance Day tournament in West Vancouver, while the U15 Thunderbirds punched their early ticket to the League Cup final after a 7-2 thrashing of the West Van Spuraways.

DECEMBER

• A fantastic high school volleyball season came to a close with the Elphinstone senior girls team finishing eighth at the provincials in Mill Bay, the Grade 8 girls finishing second at the Vancouver and Districts and the junior girls team qualifying for the provincials.

• A young, rebuilding wrestling team from Elphinstone showed a lot of improvement and promise at the annual Rudolph Rumble. With coach Clint Fox turning over the reins to new coach Eric Sullivan, the Cougars are a small group this season with four vets and four first-time wrestlers. The Rumble was a chance for all of them to get in three matches against quality competition from Sentinel, Collingwood and Carson Graham.

• Ryan Dempster officially announced his retirement from baseball signing a one-day contract so he could retire with the Chicago Cubs. He then accepted a job to join the Cubs’ front office as an assistant to the general manager.

• Kyla Richey and her UBC team from 2009/10 will be inducted into the inaugural Volleyball BC Hall of Fame in January.
