Some new faces behind the scenes are helping to usher in a new season for the Sunshine Coast Skating Club.

Stacey Rosenberg is the new club president and along with a full board, committed coaches, parents and skaters, she is confident the club can have a successful season.

“We have a great skating season planned,” she said. “I think many people do not understand how many skating programs we offer and how awesome our professional coaches are for getting kids on the ice and bringing out their best.”

The new season officially started on Sept. 2 with the club’s first ice session.

Rosenberg said she expects skater numbers in the 50 to 100 range, although those numbers could change as registration picks up throughout the month.

The fall session runs from September to December with the winter session from January to March. The club is on the ice five days a week with weekends set aside for competitions off-Coast.

Head coach Lesleigh Farr is in her seventh year with the club, and Rosenberg said she brings a wealth of professionalism and experience to the club.

“We want every skater to do their best and reach to attain all their goals and that begins and ends with coaching,” Rosenberg said. “In the past year or so we’ve also had some fluctuation with our board, but that is stabilized now and we want to do everything we can to see the club grow and be even more successful.”

She said last year was tough on the club as they tried to get back on track after losing valuable ice time when the Sunshine Coast Arena in Sechelt was shut down for a year.

“That hurt us, minor hockey, all the ice user groups,” she said. “But there was nothing we could do, so we had to just move forward. Our goals remain the same and that is to provide the best competitive environment for our skaters to be successful.”
