SCA medals at Squamish Days 10k

Sports in Brief
Squamish Day 10 km
Members of the Sunshine Coast Athletics, pictured left to right; Steve Merrick, Suzette Narbonne, Teresa Nightingale, Alex Nightingale and Larry Nightingale all picked up medals at the Squamish Days 10km run on Aug. 3.

All five participating members of Sunshine Coast Athletics (SCA) had podium finishes at the Aug. 3 Squamish Days 10k, race No. 10 of the 11-race Lower Mainland Road Race Series (LMRRS).

Three silvers for Teresa, Larry and Alex Nightingale and two bronze medals for Steve Merrick and Suzette Narbonne made a “full house” of age group medals, and third place in the team category.

As usual for this event, the early August heat took its toll on most participants, on what would otherwise be a very fast out and back course. Even so, SCA team members managed to post times similar to what they ran at the much cooler Summerfast 10k two weeks ago.

Alex sits in second place in the M19&U division of the Lower Mainland Series. Teresa is also second in the F45-49 division, and Narbonne is third in the F50-54 with the potential to move into second.

Merrick has a top four finish in M45-49 locked up, while Larry will need another strong podium finish at the final race to move into the top five in the M50-54 division.

Dodgers eliminated at provincials

The Sunshine Coast peewee Dodgers ended their run for the provincial championship with an 8-0 regular season and a 3-1 record at last weekend’s provincial championships.

In their final round robin game, the Dodgers lost 16-4 to North Delta resulting in three-way tie for first place between the Dodgers, North Delta and Salmon Arm.

In accordance with the B.C. Minor Baseball provincial tie-break rules, the Dodgers were eliminated based on the highest percentage of runs allowed in a defensive innings in the round robin.

Rugby sevens

An annual rugby day has been planned for this Saturday, Aug. 16.

Interested sevens rugby players can meet from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Cliff Gilker in an event organized by John Rainer.
