The 37th annual Sunshine Coast Open Tennis Tournament was a smashing success last weekend in Gibsons. Perfect weather and playing conditions were the backdrop for some first-class tennis and a fantastic event.
A total of 43 competitors competed in the five main draws. There were new faces this year, with competitors from several Lower Mainland tennis clubs.
Chad Brachat of Victoria captured the men's single's trophy for the third consecutive year beating local Peter Beyser in an entertaining final. Tammy Klashinsky won the ladies singles over Karen Cunningham in a tough fought, close match.
Brachat teamed up with local, John Nygren to win the men's doubles over Dave Pentland and Dave Dundas of White Rock and Langley. The mixed doubles was won by Carolyn Hayley and Dundas of Langley over locals Sandra Watt and Gustav Guzek. Shelley Lawrence and Watt won the women's doubles over Cathy Bond and Anne Maki from the Lower Mainland.
The consolation events also had some first-class competitive play.
Zachery Wenzel of Los Angeles won the men's singles over Karl Zapanta.
Guzek and Gord Halloran won the men's doubles over Geoff Clements and Al Garrels. Cielo Lyle-Shortt won the women's singles over Michelle Lewis. Michelle and Keith Lewis won the mixed doubles over Lyle-Shortt and Karl Zapanta and local Katie Munroe and Ann Scott won women's doubles over Karin Tigges and Nancy Hancock of White Rock.
The event was highlighted by an outstanding player event social at Russell Crum and Janice Johnston's private grass court in Roberts Creek. In a Wimbledon like setting, everyone was invited to play on the grass; bare feet preferable to tennis shoes. Plenty of laughter with the crazy bounces on grass and a beautiful venue, with a salmon dinner to conclude the night.
